    • Care, Use and Maintenance of the Practice Microscope

Laboratory work is a key area of the veterinary nurse’s role, with a number of laboratory procedures and tests performed by the veterinary nurse on a daily basis.

The practice laboratory contains numerous pieces of equipment – from the centrifuge and refractometer, to point-of-care testing kits, to advanced laboratory analysers – and it is vitally important that the veterinary nurse can competently use, care for and maintain this equipment, in order to achieve accurate diagnostic results.

By the end of this module you will be able to:

      1. Identify the type of microscope used in practice, and the common samples examined microscopically
      2. Identify the different microscope components, and their functions
      3. Prepare the microscope for use
      4. Accurately examine a sample
      5. Correctly clean and shut down the microscope after use
      6. Create a maintenance schedule for their practice microscope, in order to care for it correctly.
